Spring is a great time for pulling out the hiking boots and taking off in search of some of the hundreds of waterfalls that proliferate the Ozark Mountains landscape. In April, a group of students from the hiking class — yes, that’s an actual class — joined forces with an Ozarks Outdoors group to visit several breath-taking waterfalls within a two-hour drive of campus. One of their stops was Pam’s Grotto near the Haw Creek Falls Recreation Area in northeast Johnson County. Located in a narrow ravine lined with towering bluffs that are popular with rock climbers, the waterfall at Pam’s Grotto is one of the hidden gems of the Ozark Mountains. Pam’s Grotto is located on Arkansas Highway 123, between Lamar and Pelsor, less than an hour’s drive from the University. How fortunate are we to have backyard like this?
