The Trail for Literacy

Freshman English major Jake Sawyer of Mena, Arkansas, will spend this summer in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, doing two of his favorites things — reading and hiking. Sawyer was recently selected to participate in a summer internship program with TrailBooks, a nonprofit organization that promotes literacy and outdoor experiences for youth. An avid reader and outdoorsman, Sawyer was one of just four college students selected nationwide from more than 200 applications. “Even though I was a freshman, the director told me that she fought for me because she thought I had great energy and personality for their organization,” he said. “When I got the news that I had received the internship, I was very excited because it’s such a great opportunity to combine two things that I love.”
